Anything But Cute Mixed Media Challenge - May "Vintage Garden"

Hello eveyone,

I am thrilled to announce the very first challenge at Anything But Cute Mixed Media Challenge Blog!!!

What do you think of when you hear the word Garden? Is it flowers, birds, butterflies, dragonflies, bees, lattice, vines, fences? Whatever garden vision you have, we want to see it. But make sure it's in a vintage style.

Well, when I first heard what the theme was, I automatically saw picket fence and home :) So here is what I created for this challenge:

Here are some pics of the creation process:

I created a frame for my shadow box using a heavy cardstock, texture paste applied through Bricked Stencil, and added some color to it with distress inks...

The delicate branches are Sizzix diecuts and flowers are handmade by me using a 5 petal flower punch, flower pearl stamens and some distress ink...

I made the fence from cardboard. I covered it with white paint, then applied clear crackle paint and once that layer was dry I randomly applied distress paints and inks to give it a weathered look...

I added some moss behind the fence to give it more of an old garden look...

The flowers and branches were arranged to give it a look of trailing vine on the wall...

Home Sweet Home sign was mounted on a piece of cardstock covered with crackle paste to give it an illusion of a stucco wall and a wall plaque...

That is all from me....Please head over to Anything But Cute Mixed Media Challenge Blog to check out fabulous makes of my fellow Design Team mates and I sure hope you'll join us in our very first challenge :)

The winner will receive the honor of being our Guest Designer for an upcoming challenge!

Over at Anything But Cute we just love to see all the seasoned and expert mixed media artists, but we also want to encourage those who are just getting their feet wet. Our design team will always be on the lookout for these exceptional projects and artists. You just never know when we might be giving out something special to a talented mixed media newcomer. We all have to start somewhere, right?

Challenge runs until June 4th - we can't wait to see what you come up with!

  4. Wow, wow, WOW, Samra! You've gone and done it again, my friend! You always surprise me with your ability to make something so soft and shabby, and so realistic at the same time! I love the scene you have created in this shadowbox, from the bricked wall to those yummy flowers! No one makes flowers like you, and while I just knew they HAD to be home made, they are so perfect, I thought they were from a fine craft boutique! The colors are so soft and dreamy. Your picket fence is giving me fence envy--I could never get a crackle that looks like that! Samra, I could sit here all day, and just stare, but I'll just say that you have really made my day with this FABULICIOUS work of art! A bunch of big crafty hugs! I'm so honored to be on this amazing Anything But Cute team with you!

  9. This is wonderful Samra. It reminds me of my Grammie's house/garden because... you are right... for me - that was HOME. Until you said that a garden reminded you of home... I hadn't even thought of that! I can't grow anything - inside or out - so my family wouldn't think of "home" that way at all - eheheheheh!! But yes... Grammie had an entire acre of land that was nothing but her garden and when I was there... I was HOME. Your project really warmed my heart and it's just beautiful. Thanks bunches. j.

  11. Super stunning my friend!! I love the softness you create with your pieces... and how do get that soft glow across your photos, every time I try something like that it just looks like a blurry white border rather than something elegant. Hope you got my email Samra - if not let me know and I'll send again :) Hugs, Georgie xx
